September 17, 2026- Safer with a drive that is misbehaving. Finding duplicates means reading part of each file. If a read fails partway, GetFerret now treats that file as unknown instead of comparing it, so a file that only looks like a copy of another can never be grouped with it. The conditions that cause a read to fail, a failing or disconnecting drive, are exactly when you are most likely to be tidying files.

August 22, 2026- Your licence keeps working offline. GetFerret now carries a signed record of your licence, so it keeps running for weeks without a connection. A network problem on your side or ours will not interrupt an app you paid for.
- Moving to a new Mac is cleaner. A licence is tied to the Mac it was activated on, and the Deactivate button now stays available even after a trial or licence lapses, so freeing a seat never needs an email to us.

July 31, 2026- Your catalog keeps itself current. GetFerret watches your connected drives and picks up new, changed and deleted files as they happen. It also catches up on anything that changed while GetFerret was closed, which it could not do before. If you have had GetFerret installed for a while, this is the update that stops your catalog drifting out of date.
- A nightly pass for drives that cannot be watched. Network drives and NAS shares cannot report changes the way a local disk does, so we now re-check them on a schedule. It only looks at what changed and never re-reads file contents. Turn it off or pick a different time in Settings, and use Check Now whenever you want.
- Heads up: a few hours of catch-up after you update. Because GetFerret was missing changes before, there is a backlog of stored file fingerprints to re-verify. It works through them quietly in the background over a few hours on the first day, then goes quiet for a month. Nothing is wrong if you notice some background activity right after updating.
- Moving files to the Trash is instant. Trashing a large selection used to lock the app up for seconds at a time. It is now effectively immediate no matter how much you select. Opening a folder is faster too, for the same reason.
- Drag files out of GetFerret. Drag any result straight into Finder, onto another drive, or into a web upload box. Files on drives that are not plugged in cannot be dragged, since there is nothing to hand over.
- Press Space for a full preview. Select a file and press Space, exactly as you would in Finder. Arrow keys move through your results while the preview stays open.
- Move or copy, your choice. Sending files to another folder now asks which you meant and names the destination. Copy is the default, so a mis-aimed action cannot take your only copy of a file with it. Tick the box to stop being asked, and change it later in Settings.
- Integrity alerts now look at the drive, not just the file. When several files on the same drive change silently, that usually means the drive is failing rather than the files being unlucky. GetFerret now says so, shows what the drive reports about its own health, and gives you a direct route to copying your at-risk files somewhere safe. We are deliberately careful about when we say it: source code and config files are left out of that judgement, because editors and version control rewrite those in place all the time, and we would rather stay quiet than tell you a healthy drive is dying.
- Clearer reading on files that only look corrupted. A flagged file that is the kind of thing editors and version control rewrite now says so, so you can tell the routine cases from the ones worth investigating.
- Nests are easier to create. There is now a plus button beside the Nests heading, so you can make one without having files selected first.
- A drive that cannot be read is no longer treated as an empty drive. If a drive is unplugged mid scan, loses permission, or stops responding, GetFerret leaves that drive's catalog alone instead of assuming its files are gone.

July 21, 2026- Previews for every photo format. Thumbnails and the large preview pane now show the real picture for PNG, HEIC, RAW, GIF, TIFF and more, not just JPEG. Skimming a drive full of images is a lot easier.
- File actions on right-click. Right-click any file to open it, reveal it in Finder, copy it, move it to another folder, or move it to the Trash. Double-click opens a file too.
- Clearer integrity alerts. When a file's contents change unexpectedly, Safekeeping now names the exact file, explains what happened, and lets you reveal it or mark a known-good copy to clear the warning.
- Moved or deleted files are obvious. If a file in your catalog is no longer where it was indexed, the preview says so plainly instead of showing a blank placeholder. Re-catalog that drive to refresh the list.

July 19, 2026- GetFerret updates itself now. New versions install automatically in the background, so you no longer have to download and replace the app by hand. You can also check for updates any time from the menu.

July 18, 2026- Fixed high CPU use. GetFerret could keep a CPU core busy in the background while cataloging, even when it looked idle, if a file it was checking had been moved or deleted. It now settles down and stays quiet when there is nothing to do.

July 14, 2026- Fixed drive filtering. Filtering a drive by kind (like Video) now finds matching files anywhere on that drive, including inside subfolders. Before, it could come up empty even when the files were right there.
- Fixed file types. TypeScript files (.ts) were being mistaken for video. They now show up as code, where they belong.
- Better on macOS 15. Small text-display and stability improvements.
